NEW YORK CITY — Anarchy no longer reigns in New York City, at least according to the federal government. President Joe Biden on Wednesday formally revoked a memorandum signed by Donald Trump that sought to cut funding from several cities the 45th president deemed "anarchist" havens. New York City, Portland and Seattle all received — but didn't necessarily earn — the designation. Trump's critics assailed the move as a political tactic that put the Democrat-led cities at risk. "This divisive threat to cut off funding for New York City by the Trump admin endangered every New Yorker as we continued to battle the #COVID19 pandemic," New York Attorney General Letitia James, who battled often with Trump, said in a statement. Federal officials tried to yank MTA and school disinfection money amid the "anarchist" designation, but it appears there were no lasting effect. But the political brouhaha did underline what amounted to a long divorce between Trump and his hometown. Trump wasted no opportunity to bash his city, calling it a "ghost town" to much bemusement by New Yorkers dealing with a very much alive metropolis. He shifted his residence to Florida and once-prominent "T-R-U-M-P" signs steadily disappeared from buildings. The city severed contracts with Trump's company after an act of legitimate anarchy — the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol carried out in Trump's name.
