MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Kinecta Federal Credit Union's third annual Defying the Odds Black History event will be held today [Thursday, Feb. 25] from 1-3 p.m. The symposium is designed to help with the unique challenges young Black men face while transitioning from high school to college or into full-time employment. Manhattan Beach Police Chief Derrick Abell, Former White House Director of the Presidential Personnel Office Jonathan McBride, LA Galaxy soccer player Cameron Dunbar, and Pittsburgh Pirates First Base Coach Tarrik Brock will address approximately 40 African-American male students from Centinela Valley Union High School District, Mira Costa High School andCompton Unified School District. The event will be moderated by actor Jakobe' Dempsey with transitions by multi-platinum award-winning music producer Sorry Jaynari. Topics will include skillsets for thriving in the workplace, interacting with law enforcement, financial wellness, goal setting and resiliency. The students will be able to hear from the professionals and have an opportunity to ask questions and share their own stories and goals. The event is part of Kinecta's commitment to the advancement and strengthening of the communities it serves. The Defying the Odds Black History event connects students to tools, community, and contacts to help them define their own paths of success.
