Press release from Macomb Community College: Macomb Community College will debut a 16-week noncredit dental assisting program in fall 2021. On program completion, individuals are prepared for entry-level employment as a chairside dental assistant, supporting dentists and dental hygienists in patient treatment and care. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of dental assistants is projected to grow five to seven percent in Michigan through 2029, faster than the average for all occupations, with an estimated annual mean wage of $39,340. In Macomb's dental assisting program, students will learn dental and oral anatomy, infection control, nutrition, dental specialties, preparation of dental instruments and dental impressions, and chairside technique. Students will also learn about dental health career opportunities that are possible through further education and licensure. Those completing the program will earn a noncredit workforce certificate from the college's Workforce & Continuing Education Department. The program includes both online lecture and onsite laboratory instruction. All training takes place at the college's state-of-the-art dental clinic and laboratory in Warren, Mich. Total cost of the program is $2,324 for the 176 contact hours. The student is also responsible for the cost of textbooks, a physical exam, any immunizations, drug screen, criminal background check and uniform costs. Those interested in learning more about becoming a dental assistant are encouraged to attend one of four program information sessions. The workshops will be held virtually from 7 to 8 p.m. on the following Thursdays: March 11, April 8, May 13 and July 29. For more information and to reserve your place at one of the workshops, call 586.286.2097 or email [email protected]. This press release was produced by Macomb Community College.
