Berkeley, California (Thursday, February 25, 2021) - On February 23rd at 8:55 pm, a woman was walking through the gas station (on the southwest corner of MLK Jr. Way and University Avenue) when a suspect blocked her path and grabbed her by the neck. The suspect then put the woman in chokehold and dragged her near some garbage bins behind the gas station. The woman dropped her purse and was able to break free of the suspect and run away for help.
When a bystander went over to the gas station to retrieve the woman's stolen purse, the suspect chased after the bystander with a knife. The suspect continued to chase the bystander until the suspect tripped over the University Avenue center median.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect at the gas station and took him into custody. When officers searched the suspect, they found a folding knife with 5-6" blade as well as a glass smoking pipe that is commonly used to smoke methamphetamine.
The suspect (a 59-year-old man, no address) was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and kidnapping.
