Press release from the City of Phoenix: February 24, 2021 A renovation of South Phoenix's Lenang Park was completed earlier this week, and on Wednesday District 8 Councilmember Carlos Garcia marked the occasion by participating in a ceremonial ribbon cutting. He was joined by residents from the nearby neighborhood and Parks and Recreation Department staff. The mini park, located at 2601 E. Southgate Ave., features a new basketball court, playground, turf area, benches and lighting. The playground includes multiple areas for climbing, a slide and swings. Lenang Park originally opened in 1969. The renovation cost approximately $220,000 and was funded by the voter-approved Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative (PPPI). City of Phoenix parks, hiking trails and golf courses have remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but use of some park amenities is being restricted – including basketball and volleyball courts, fitness equipment, ramadas and picnic tables, and sports complexes. Being outdoors is important for health and wellness, and the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to get outside, get exercise and practice responsible physical distancing while exploring all that the city's park system has to offer. Detailed information about the city's outdoor recreational options, free and fee-based virtual recreational programs for all ages and ability levels, and guidelines for how to responsibly use city parks and trails during the pandemic is available at Phoenix.gov/Parks.
