When Will Creaky Crane Repairs End And West Peachtree Open?

ATLANTA — The giant construction crane teetering above West Peachtree Street since last Friday threatening pedestrians and traffic below may soon be repaired. In a statement released Thursday, Birmingham-based construction company Brasfield & Gorrie said efforts to repair the damaged crane were wrapping up. "Crews have begun the process of removing the upper horizontal members of the tower crane," the statement said. "This work will continue through the evening. Once that phase is complete and the area is safe, we will coordinate with Atlanta Fire and other officials to allow residents of the evacuated apartment building to return to the area and determine when it is safe for businesses to return." The crane on the site of 1105 West Peachtree began leaning dangerously from its joints last Friday prompting emergency officials to close the street between 10th and 14th Streets to midtown traffic and evacuate nearby businesses and residential buildings. Brasfield & Gorrie paid for hotel expenses for displaced residents of nearby apartments and condos, spokeswoman Meg Burton said. Meanwhile, a pair of mobile cranes came in to support the dangling structure while crews worked to dismantle it. When the towering crane is taken down the two "assist cranes" will have to be taken apart. "We expect West Peachtree Street to remain closed until the assist cranes are disassembled," the Brasfield & Gorrie statement said.
