Description

As a skilled construction craft laborer apprentice with Merit Apprenticeship Alliance (a NYSDOL registered apprenticeship sponsor), you will be provided on-the-job (OJT) training and classroom instruction in the Skilled Construction Craft Laborer trade. The OJT tasks involve physical labor on heavy highway, building and environmental construction projects. Basic knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools of construction helpful. The Apprentice will: Participate in site/project preparation and maintenance Clean construction site to eliminate possible hazards Participate in the operation and care of tools and equipment Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, and other temporary structures Load and unload trucks and haul and hoist materials Signal equipment operators to move machinery, equipment, and materials Tend pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools and equipment Install utility, sewer and pipe construction Perform road construction activities involving asphalt, concrete and concrete supports, highway signs, guard rails and landscaping. Work in excavations (with weather protection) and fencing and masonry operations. Classroom training is provided during the non-construction season. Supplemental unemployment insurance may be available when completing classroom training. Education Level Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent Experience Required: None License Required: Valid Driver's License. In addition, apprentices must provide their own reliable transportation to and from job sites and all classroom training (related instruction). Apprentices must be willing to travel for the purpose of successfully completing on-the-job training through employment assignments. Apprentices will, as a condition of continued enrollment in the program, pass a drug test, and be subject to random drug testing in compliance with our drug-free Commitment. Wage: $15 per hour (on private work) in the first term. Wages increase based on the apprentices' successful completion of the OJT and classroom training. Wages on "public work" are approximately 20% higher. Benefits: The Alliance provides all apprentices with a generous benefit package which includes an automatic 5% 401(k) contribution on fringe supplements contributions and health insurance.
