WAKEFIELD, MA — A Wakefield family has been displaced following a two-alarm fire on Crystal Street Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the single-family home around 3:40 p.m. and found heavy flames coming from the rear basement door and first-floor area above it, Fire Chief Michael Sullivan said. The main body of the fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, and the remainder was put out after about an hour. The home sustained fire damage to the rear of the basement and first floor areas and "significant" smoke and water damage to the remainder of the home, Sullivan said. The occupants of the home will be displaced until it can be repaired. The fire originated in the rear of the basement, Sullivan said. The cause is believed to be accidental. "I credit Captain Walsh and the on-duty firefighters for quickly extinguishing this fire," Sullivan said in a statement. "They took decisive action to knock down the flames quickly, likely saving the home from becoming a total loss." No injuries were reported.
