CHP Stops Driver Going 141 MPH

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — A car speeding at 141 MPH on Interstate Highway 580 was safely stopped by a local California Highway Patrol Officer. According to the ticket shared by the CHP, the driver, who was not identified, had a suspended license. "Luckily this driver was stopped before he hurt or killed someone," the CHP said on social media. Since the start of the pandemic when traffic dramatically decreased on California roads because of remote workers and stay-at-home orders, the CHP reports a dramatic increase in the number of speeders clocked at more than 100 MPH. By mid-April of last year, the CHP warned of an "87% increase in citations for speeding in excess of 100 mph that coincides with decreased traffic volumes during the COVID-19 pandemic." "It is alarming to see the number of citations officers are writing for excessive speeds on California roadways," said CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley. "Higher speeds can lead to much more serious injuries and significantly increase the chance of death should a crash occur. Keep yourself and those on the road around you safe. Slow down and drive at a safe, legal speed." This driver had his car impounded by the Castro Valley Office of the CHP.
