BEACHWOOD, OH — There have been more than 2,500 COVID-19 cases associated with an Beachwood ZIP code, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
The 44122 ZIP code, which stretches into Beachwood and surrounding communities, has seen 2,504 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. That's up from 2,401 cases two weeks ago.
While the nation mourns the more than 500,000 Americans who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ohio is cautiously optimistic that the virus' threat is receding slightly.
Health officials in the Buckeye State are vaccinating older Ohioans and people with chronic medical conditions. Gov. Mike DeWine describes his strategy as protecting "our most vulnerable."
Ohioans 65 and older account for more than 87 percent of Ohio's 16,000 COVID-19 deaths.
The strategy has led to decreasing numbers of cases and deaths in nursing homes and similar facilities. Last week, there were 343 new COVID-19 cases in nursing homes. That's down from the state's peak of 2,832 cases in one week in December.
