Strong Winds Prompt More Than 70 Ocean Rescues, Lifeguards Say

MARINA DEL REY, CA — Los Angeles lifeguards reported 71 rescues over the weekend as windy weather pushed hazardous swells and swimming conditions across the Santa Monica Bay. "These cross/offshore winds aligned with uneven ocean floor and short period wind swell to create hazardous conditions for many surfers/swimmers resulting in several ocean rescues," Los Angeles lifeguards said. "Sunday turned out to be another off-season beach day with light winds and temperatures into the 70s." Inshore holes continue to be leading cause for ocean rescues over the past couple of weeks, lifeguards said. Here's how lifeguards describe inshore holes: "At certain times of the year, especially during or after periods of large surf, the ocean bottom can be very uneven. Waves break in shallow water and displace the sand on the ocean floor. Ocean patrons may notice this condition while walking through the water close to shore, when just one step sends you from ankle-deep to waist-deep water. These areas may be somewhat difficult to identify. Consult the lifeguard prior to entering the water to get a report of the conditions." Strong north and northeast winds are expected to reach 5 to 10 mph Monday through Wednesday, with gusts reaching near 15 mph in Marina del Rey, according to the National Weather Service.
