Dr. Jemison is the first Black woman in space ... and so much more! Dr. Jemison is a physician, engineer, astronaut, former Peace Corps medical officer in Africa, Dartmouth college professor, and visionary. She is also fluent in Russian, Japanese, and Swahili! Inspired by Sally Ride's trip into space in 1983, Dr. Jemison applied to NASA's astronaut program and was one of 15 people chosen (out of 2,000 applicants!). On September 12, 1992, Dr. Jemison was the Mission Specialist aboard the space shuttle Endeavor, which completed 127 orbits around the Earth.
