Josephine was a famous dancer and singer during the Roaring Twenties. As a teenager, she had left the poverty and discrimination of her hometown of St. Louis for Paris, France. Josephine became very popular and used her fame to make sure that she never performed for segregated audiences. Josephine was also a spy for the French Resistance during World War II! After Nazi Germany invaded France in 1940, Josephine worked to send secret messages -- using invisible ink in her music sheets! -- to the Allied Forces.
