WAUKESHA, WI – Waukesha officials are looking for new volunteers to conduct wetland monitoring this spring through the County Park System's Conservation in the Parks Citizen Science Program. Retzer Nature Center is offering two free orientation workshops in February for people interested in helping the county's management of crucial wildlife habitats. "These volunteers have an immense impact on our wetland conservation efforts," Julia Robson, Waukesha County Conservation Biologist said in a news release. "Last year, they surveyed 43 different wetlands and documented over 20 species. The data they collect guides the management and improvement of these important natural areas." Volunteers do not need any prior experience to participate, the training will teach people how to identify and document the presence and distribution of sensitive wildlife populations such as salamanders, frogs, toads, crayfish and fairy shrimp. All equipment will be provided. The wetland monitoring orientation sessions will be held at Retzer Nature Center, S14W28167 Madison Street, Waukesha. Sessions are being held on the following days: Saturday, February 15 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Register online by Friday, February 14.Wednesday, February 19 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Register online by Tuesday, February 18.
