MILWAUKEE, WI — The Milwaukee Brewers home opener game scheduled on Saturday was postponed for the second time this week after four additional players and staff for the St. Louis Cardinals tested positive for coronavirus, according to an ESPN report. Amid the new St. Louis positive tests for COVID-19, today's Cardinals-Brewers game has been postponed, a source tells ESPN, confirming the @JonHeyman report.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) August 1, 2020 A source also confirmed the postponement to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been released. Among confirmed new cases in the Cardinals organization are three staff members and one player, The Athletic reported. Of the four new positives on the #Cardinals that I can confirm, three are staff. One is a player.— Mark Saxon (@markasaxon) August 1, 2020 Amid the postponement, Milwaukee also announced that Gold Glove center fielder Lorenzo Cain will not participate in the rest of the 2020 season. "We fully support Lorenzo's decision, and we will miss his talents on the field and leadership in the clubhouse," the team said in a statement posted to Twitter. The Brewers were originally scheduled to play the Cardinals in a three-game weekend series, starting with a 1:10 p.m. game Friday. However, Friday's home opener game was postponed to Sunday after Major League Baseball officials confirmed two members of the St. Louis Cardinals organization tested positive for coronavirus. The teams are scheduled to play a makeup doubleheader Sunday afternoon but in light of the new positive tests, a postponement is likely to happen. Saturday's game between the Brewers and Cardinals marked the 17th postponement in 10 days, prompting at least two more players to opt out and casting doubt the league can complete a truncated 2020 season.
