Milwaukee Deputies Respond To 60 Crashes During Winter Storm

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI – The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office responded to 123 winter weather service calls in 18 hours, between 10 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 through 4 p.m. Tuesday. Type of calls deputies responded to during that period: Property damage crashes: 53Crashes with injuries: 7Disabled vehicles: 71Abandoned vehicles: 3 The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office reminds drivers of the following these safety tips when navigating winter weather conditions: Remember that excessive speed and following too close contribute to crashes.Reduce your speed to match road conditions. Double or even triple your following distance; instead of keeping two car lengths between you and the car in front of you, maintain a distance of four or even six car lengths.Wear your seatbelt.Make sure your headlights are on.Slow down and prepare to stop.Move over or slow down for first responders and emergency personnelIf you are in a ditch: Turn on your hazard lights, remain in your vehicle and call 911.If you are in a crash and your vehicle is still drivable, it's safer to drive off the freeway to nearest exit. Once you have removed your vehicle from the highway, call 911 or MCSO's non-emergency number at 414-278-4788.If you are in a crash and your vehicle is not movable or you are injured: turn on your hazard lights, remain in your vehicle with your seatbelt on and call 911.
