FRANKLIN,WI—There is a push by some in the community to stop plans for a slaughterhouse. The newly formed group, Franklin Community Advocates, is leading the effort opposing a move to build a new slaughterhouse at W. Loomis Road & Ryan Road. Strauss Brands needs special approval from Franklin for their site plans since current rules don't allow the development of the facility that is currently planned by Strauss Brands. Opponents of the plan say the development will impact property value, the character of the community, and public health. They want Franklin to deny the approvals needed to move the project forward. The plan for the meat processing plant sits on a 30-acre site. On the site, the company wants to build a 152,000 square foot facility that employs 261 people who would process up to 500 cattle daily. Franklin staff said the process would be self-contained within the facility and the community wouldn't see, hear, or smell the process happening inside the building. Staff recommends approval of the plans. The company has operated in Franklin for 50 years so far, but they said they have outgrown their 1970s facility. Thursday evening Strauss representatives held an informal meeting with the community to discuss concerns and answer questions about their plans. Opponents plan to share their concerns Tuesday, October 20 at the Common Council meeting.
