37 Rescued Pit Bulls Up For Adoption In Tacoma

TACOMA, WA — More than three dozen dogs and puppies are ready to find their forever homes, two months after they were rescued from a suspected dogfighting operation in Tacoma, according to the Humane Society. Nearly 50 pit bulls were rescued in December after a tipster told animal control the dogs appeared to be starving. Investigators said many of the dogs were kept in crates inside a garage with no ventilation or lighting. The dogs' owner, 40-year-old Elmer Givens, was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and animal fighting, but he has yet to be formally charged. A judge denied his request to have the dogs returned last month. Among the dogs rescued, 37 are awaiting adoption at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. The dogs range in age from just a few months old to 5 years old. The Humane Society said all of the dogs have been friendly, loving and sociable since they arrived. Anyone interested in adopting one of the dogs must submit an application and complete a comprehensive background check with Pierce County Animal Control. Applications can be dropped off in-person, or emailed to the Humane Society.
