Woodland Park Zoo Celebrates Birth Of Precious Bird Babies

SEATTLE, WA — The Woodland Park Zoo would like to present: birds. Specifically, these birds: Courtesy: Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren/Woodland Park ZooWhy these birds? Because these birds are new, and covered with a soft gentle new-bird fluff and a newborn's innocence. The zoo says they're spur-winged lapwing chicks, four babies who hatched in the last week of June. According to zookeepers they're the first of their species to ever be born at Woodland Park. The birdy babies and their parents live in the African Savanna Aviary in the zoos east side. That part of the zoo has been kept closed to the public because it's not big enough for safe social distancing during the pandemic, but that's just as well because the babies need time and space to bond with their parents before they're ready for the spotlight. In fact, the zoo says their parents have been very vocal about protecting their chicks, and trying to preserve their privacy.
