RENTON, WA — Renton City Councilmember Kim-Khánh Văn will challenge incumbent Reagan Dunn for a seat on the Metropolitan King County Council in 2021, the campaign announced Thursday.
Văn is an immigration and personal injury attorney and currently serves as chair of the Community Service Committee on the Renton City Council. Dunn has served on the King County Council since 2005, representing District 9, and chairs the Local Services (Regional Roads & Bridges) committee and is vice-chair of the council.
In her official campaign announcement, Văn said, if elected, she would build on her record of promoting small businesses, advocating for housing, and supporting inclusion diversity initiatives in Renton.
"On the Renton City Council, I've protected our communities, supported small businesses, and championed the needs of veterans and families in need of support — especially during these challenging times," Văn said. "We need this focus and commitment on the County Council to better partner with South County cities and communities. I'll bring fresh ideas and hands-on leadership to address the economic, health, and housing challenges facing our families and small businesses as we recover from the pandemic and build stronger communities for all who call this region home."
Văn, born in Vietnam, would be the first Asian-Pacific Islander to serve on the county council and the first woman of color to serve since the modern Metropolitan King County Council was established in 1992. Early endorsements include former county councilmember Larry Gossett and Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho.
