PUYALLUP, WA — Most of Washington's schools will be resuming classes remotely when the school year starts next month, and the Puyallup School District is among them. While health experts agree it's the safest route going forward considering the recent surge in coronavirus cases, it's left some working families in the lurch as they struggle to set up child care arrangements. Now, the City of Puyallup is offering one child care solution. It's called Puyallup's Education and Activities Kamp, or PEAK, and while it's not free, it is cheaper for Puyallup residents. Puyallup's residents also receive preferential treatment for registration, which opened Monday for city residents, but remains closed to everyone else until Saturday, August 29. The program, hosted by City of Puyallup Parks & Recreation, touts itself as a full-day child care and support program for elementary age kids in grades K - 5. Organizers say staff will supervise students as they take their classes online, but will also make sure they get a lot of active play and structured games to help them stay stimulated and social. PEAK costs $200 a week for Puyallup residents, or $250 for those who live outside the city. Slots are limited to 60 children per week, so interested parents should sign up sooner rather than later. The program runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Sign up or learn more about the program on the city's website.
