Puyallup Confirms Utility Billing 'Data Security Incident'

PUYALLUP, WA — A ransomware attack on a utility billing vendor may have compromised the data of some Puyallup residents. The City of Puyallup says they've just become aware of an attack on their billing vendor, Automatic Funds Transfer Services, Inc (AFTS), which happened sometime overnight between Feb. 3 and 4. The city uses AFTS services to print out and mail utility billing statements. As a result, hackers may have access to some residents private data, including: The resident's nameTheir utility bill account numberTheir addressBilling amounts The city says no other data should have been compromised, and that their network remains secure. AFTS is attempting to retrieve all the stolen information, and the attack has been reported to the police and FBI, who are investigating.
