VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 3,173 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, lifting the seven-day average of positive cases from 2,455 on Friday to 2,563. Northern Virginia continues to lead the state's regions in new coronavirus cases. On Saturday, the region reported 1,043 new cases, the third-highest daily count for the region since the start of the pandemic. The current seven-day average of 806.0 cases in Northern Virginia is the highest since the start of the pandemic. In other regions of Virginia, 787 new cases were reported in the southwest (578.4 average), 511 in the northwest region (404.7 average), 478 in the eastern region (419.3 average) and 354 in the central region (354.1 average), according to the VDH. While Northern Virginia surpassed 1,000 new cases for the third time since the start of the pandemic, no new deaths were reported in the region on Saturday. Virginia's seven-day positive average of PCR tests is 7.3 percent. Averages by region are 10.1 percent in the southwest region, 7.5 percent in the northern region, 7.4 percent in the eastern region, 6.0 percent in the central region and 5.9 percent in the northwest region. Current statewide hospitalizations stand at 1,585 with a seven-day average of 1,543.6. The peak average is 1,573.3 on May 12. By region, COVID-19 hospitalization as of Saturday stood at 403 in the northern region, 351 in the southwest region, 307 in the central region, 285 in the eastern region and 239 in the northwest region. According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, the 1,585 current COVID-19 patients include 149 on ventilators and 370 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 27 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 71 percent. There are no hospitals reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours. The last time PPE difficulties were reported was Sept. 18.
