WOODBRIDGE, VA — A special-use permit that will allow the Dar Al-Noor Mosque in Woodbridge to expand from 12,000 square feet to 88,000 square feet was approved early Wednesday. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors approved the mosque's expansion, which will allow operators to add a prayer hall, administrative offices, banquet hall, day care, and private school. The mosque will not be eligible for a certificate of occupancy until Feb. 3, 2022. The mosque did not offer a timeline for the construction on the expansion. Tuesday night's board of county supervisors meeting stretched into Wednesday morning before a vote was held. There, some residents voiced concerns about the effect of the expansion on parking and traffic in the area. To compromise, representatives for the Dar Al-Noor Mosque said they would provide $51,000 to help cover the cost of a new traffic light on Hoadly Road outside of the mosque. The county estimates the new traffic light will cost between $800,000 and $1 million. Many speakers at the meeting voiced their support for the mosque's expansion, citing the mosque's many plans to mitigate any traffic concerns. The mosque is adding more than 400 parking spots to help accommodate the projected increase in attendance at the mosque. Have a story idea?
