WOODBRIDGE, VA — The body of a 61-year-old Woodbridge man was found in a retention pond more than a day after a family member told police that they had not heard from him, Prince William County Police said on Tuesday. Jose Enrique Ascencio was pronounced dead Monday night after his body was pulled from the retention pond behind Cheshire Station Plaza in Woodbridge. Police officials said Tuesday that they were called at 9:20 p.m. on Monday and received word that a passerby had discovered a body in the water. Police went to the retention pond where Ascencio was said to frequent. Police said Tuesday that a a family member said that they had not heard from Ascencio in more than a day. Members the Prince William County underwater search and rescue team pulled Ascencio's body from the water and he was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of the discovery, police said they had not received word that Ascencio was missing. The body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy and determination of the cause of death. Police have not yet revealed any further details and said Tuesday the incident remains under investigation. Police said that there is no threat to the community concerning the death.
