Rohrer Named Interim Fairfax County Police Chief

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed Deputy County Executive for Public Safety David M. Rohrer to serve as the county's interim police chief starting Feb. 1. The board made the appointment at its regular meeting on Tuesday. Rohrer had previously served as the county's top cop from July 2004 to 2012, before being appointed to the then newly created position of deputy county executive for public safety. He will temporarily fill the position of outgoing Chief Edwin C. Roessler, who announced his retirement last November. "I work closely with Deputy County Executive Rohrer on a daily basis and I could not be more confident in his ability to see the Police Department through this period while we search for a new chief," said County Executive Bryan Hill, in a release. "His experience and skill will allow for a seamless transition." Fairfax County has one of the lowest crime rates compared to other jurisdictions with populations of more than 1 million. The county is conducting a nationwide search for Roessler's successor. The public is invited to take part in a community survey to help inform the county's search for a new police chief. Rohrer first joined the Fairfax County Police Department as a patrol officer in 1980, moving to the department's tactical section five years later.
