YORK COUNTY, VA — Dozens of people were injured in a massive chain-reaction crash in York County that closed I-64 for hours Sunday morning. Virginia State Police say 69 vehicles were involved, and 51 people were taken to hospitals with injuries.
The crash happened around 7:50 a.m. on the Queens Creek bridge. Officials blame fog and ice on the bridge for the chain reaction.
The Virginia State Police said most of the injuries were minor and 11 are considered serious. There are no life-threatening injuries or fatalities, authorities said. At least 35 patients were rushed to Riverside Regional Medical Center with injuries ranging from minor to serious, according to the hospital.
Eastbound lanes of I-64 reopened around 11 a.m. Sunday while the entire road reopened by 3:35 p.m. State police said the eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed because of crashes resulting from rubbernecking at the westbound crashes.
