Press release from Newport News Public Schools: December 17, 2020 Heritage student wins regional computer science award Posted: December 17, 2020 Miles Thomas, a sophomore at Heritage High School, has been named the Region 2 winner for grades 6-12 in the 2020 Computer Science in Your Neighborhood competition sponsored by CodeVA and the Virginia Department of Education. In response to a prompt asking what he would create using computer science, Miles wrote an essay describing three applications he would design: two that would assist incarcerated individuals in finding jobs once released and one that would help families communicate and stay connected with those who are incarcerated. As the regional winner, Miles will receive a new PC laptop. Justin Bishop, who teaches programming at Heritage High, shared information about the contest with his students and was pleased that Miles showed the industry to write his essay and enter. CodeVA announced the winners on Monday, December 7, during its virtual kickoff for Computer Science Education Week, celebrated December 7-12. The theme for this year's week of activities is "Bring CS Home." Students, teachers and families can visit CodeVA online for activities, including online presentations and discussions.
