LEESBURG, VA – Leesburg Police are warning residents to be alert following an increase in scam calls claiming to be from a government agency asking for money. According to police, the scam callers threaten to arrest the victim if they do not provide their personal or financial information or if they do not pay fines. The callers also tell victims the issue will be fixed if they purchase money cards from a local store and provide them with the serial numbers, police said. In many cases, scammers claim to be from the IRS, Social Security Administration, Customers & Border Patrol or utility companies. Police are offering advice to residents to avoid getting scammed: Never provide personal or financial information to anyone who emails or calls unsolicited.Do not wire money and do not provide debt or credit card numbers to someone you don't know. Government agencies and utility companies will not contact you demanding immediate payment by money cards. Residents are also reminded that law enforcement agencies will never ask for money.
