HERNDON, VA — The Closet of the Greater Herndon Area, Inc., presented $45,000 in college scholarships recently to 22 graduates at five area high schools, including students from Herndon High School and South Lakes High School, according to a release.
"We are so proud of these youth and their families and are happy to continue supporting this important educational need in our community," said Closet Board President Gene Wiley, in a release.
The graduates of Herndon High School to receive scholarships from The Closet are: Lucilla Antwie, Karen Ayala-Bonilla, Caleb Calderwood, Sean Frias, Maryum Khan, and Judith Velasquez.
The graduates of South Lakes High School to receive scholarships from The Closet are: Rhema Ebna Konadu, Nicol Katherin Salinas Perez, Daniel Mebratu Tolessa, and Nia Jordan Winston.
The Closet is a non-profit thrift shop, which was founded and is operated by a group of faith-based congregations. Since 1974, it has distributed $500,000 in college scholarships to graduating students at local high schools. In addition, The Closet has given almost $3 million in direct cash grants to area service groups.
