Dumfries Man Arrested In Stafford After High-Speed Chase: Police

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A Dumfries man was arrested following a pursuit late Monday in Stafford County in which speeds reached 85 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office later learned that the man also was wanted in Prince William County on three separate charges. At around 11:20 p.m. Monday, a Stafford sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for an equipment violation in the area of Forbes Street and Falmouth Drive. The deputy turned on his emergency lights and the vehicle began speeding up. The deputy recorded the vehicle going 85 mph in a 35 mph zone. The deputy pursued the vehicle to the area of James Madison Drive where the vehicle drove over a curb and through the grass, the sheriff's office said. The man stopped the vehicle on James Madison Circle and fled on foot. The deputy chased the man on foot and apprehended him. The man initially provided a false name to deputies, according to the sheriff's office. He was later correctly identified as Joseph Wilburn, 29, of Dumfries. Wilburn was arrested for eluding, providing false identification to law enforcement, identity theft to evade law enforcement, and driving on a suspended license. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
