Police Warn Of Phone Scam Targeting Fredericksburg Residents

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Fredericksburg Residents are being warned about a phone scam where a man impersonating a police officer tries to extort money from victims, according to authorities. The Fredericksburg Police Department says that their officers will never request money over the phone. In this scam, the caller identifies himself as a sergeant with the Fredericksburg Police Department. He tells the victim there is a warrant out for their arrest, and the only way to remove the warrant is to make some kind of payment. The Fredericksburg Police Department took to Facebook to encourage residents not to believe the scam. "This is a reminder the Fredericksburg Police Department will never ask you for money," they wrote on Facebook. "Also, if you ever have concern if you are speaking to one of our police officers, please call in." To verify the identity of a police officer, residents can call the department at 540-373-3122. Additionally, the FTC provides several resources to help people avoid becoming scam victims. Their recommendations include blocking unwanted calls and text messages, not disclosing any personal information, and discussing any strange phone calls with some you trust, according to the FTC website.
