STAFFORD, VA — Two Spotsylvania County residents were arrested and charged on drug charges following a traffic stop Thursday night resulted in the discovery of suspected controlled substances, police said Friday. Tristan Smith, 22, and Summer Pennington, 23, were arrested following the traffic stop, which took place at 9:56 p.m., when officers pulled over the 2017 Jaguar the pair was traveling in police said on U.S. 17 and Plantation Drive. Both Smith, who was driving at the time of the stop, and Pennington were found to have outstanding warrants in connection with a drug investigation, Stafford County Sheriff's Department officials said. During a search of the vehicle, deputies located suspected controlled substances and Smith and Pennington were charged with drug possession with the intent to distribute narcotics and conspiracy to distribute narcotics, police said. (Stafford County Sheriff's Office).Smith is being held in at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond and Pennington was ordered to be held on a $10,000 bond, police said. According to a published report in the Free Lance-Star, Smith was convicted in 2015 on charges of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with a plot to shoot people at Riverbend High School when Smith was 17. The report said the scheme was detected before it could be carried out but involved calling in a bomb threat to the school and shooting people as they came out. Smith was tried as an adult and received 10 years but was allowed to serve his time as part of a youthful offender program, the newspaper reported.
