VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,111 additional coronavirus cases on Friday, the second consecutive day with over 1,100 new cases. The 7-day average of new cases is 1,027, and the cumulative total of cases is 124,779 cases. There have been 2,662 deaths and 9,798 hospitalizations to date. A recent increase in Virginia's 7-day new case average does not appear to be driven by Northern Virginia. The region continues to have a steady new case average at 236.1. New cases on Friday included 342 in the southwest region, 251 in the northern region, 205 in the eastern region, 168 in the central region, and 145 in the northwest region. The new case number in the southwest was the second highest for the region so far. The highest daily case number, 398, happened on Aug. 7. There have been 1,634,308 PCR tests completed in Virginia, a 15,255 increase from Thursday. The statewide 7-day average of percent positive tests is 7.8 percent as of Aug. 31, up from 7 percent a week before on Aug. 24. The regional positive percentages are 10 percent in the southwest region, 8.9 percent in the eastern region, 7.7 percent in the central region, 7.6 percent in the northwest region, and 6.4 percent in the northern region. Current COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped from 1,130 to 1,101 since Thursday. That includes 334 in the eastern region, 271 in the northern region, 231 in the central region, 157 in the southwest region, and 108 in the northwest region. According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, the hospitalizations include 128 on ventilators and 244 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 19 percent, while intensive care unit occupancy is at 79 percent. The 2019 average for ICU occupancy in Virginia was 67 percent. One hospital reports difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours. At the time of publication, data for localities' cases, hospitalizations and deaths was not displayed correctly on the VDH coronavirus dashboard.
