FALLS CHURCH, VA — If you received a car tax bill in the mail from the City of Falls Church, you didn't miss a new decal with it. The city government tweeted that the existing blue decal will stay the same for now. The decal should remain on the front windshield until further notice. Normally the new year's decal is included with the property tax bill, and enforcement of the new decal begins on Nov. 15. The decal is an indication of the personal property tax being paid. Failure to display a decal within 60 days of a new or moved vehicle into the city can result in a citation. The payment of the personal property tax, also known as the car tax, is due on Monday, Oct. 5. In addition to the personal property tax, the city charges a $33 annual vehicle license fee, which is not a fee for printing and mailing the decal every year. Other Northern localities that collect a car tax like Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties and the city of Alexandria have eliminated the decal. Manassas Park brought back a car decal in 2019, and the City of Fairfax only requires decals in its residential permit parking districts.
