Coronavirus Closes Virginia DMV Centers, Extensions Offered

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is closing all 75 customer service locations as well as mobile services from March 18 until April 2 as a result of the growing outbreak of new coronavirus, or COVID-19. In addition, the DMV is extending the expiration date for credentials set to expire up to May 15. Online and mail services and DMV Direct call centers continue to run. The DMV will extend the validity of a credential for 60 days if the expiration is between March 15 and May 15. The credential will be valid for 60 days beyond the original expiration date. This applies to driver's licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations and escort vehicle driver certificates. The DMV is continuing to process transactions sent by mail and online. The DMV encourages residents to renew their driver's license or identification card online or by mail if eligible. The 60-day extension on credential validity accounts for residents 75 and older who typically visit the DMV in person. Vehicle registrations that expire in March and April can be renewed online or by mail. Replacement titles may be obtained online, while original title transactions are available by mail. For in-person services, residents have 60 days to renew their credentials without a late fee. Residents seeking REAL ID credentials can only apply in person because of required documents. REAL ID will only be needed for these federal purposes on Oct. 1, 2020: to board domestic flights or enter secure military facilities or federal facilities that require ID. It is unclear if the COVID-19 outbreak will impact the Oct. 1 deadline. The Virginia DMV advised residents on Twitter: "The enforcement deadline for REAL ID is set by the federal government, and we follow guidance from the Department of Homeland Security. But it is important to note that, in Virginia, REAL ID is optional."
