WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA — No one was injured when a fire broke out Thursday at a West Springfield home, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
The fire happened at a single-family home in the 8100 block of Marcy Avenue. Around 11:16 p.m., units from Fairfax County and Fort Belvoir responded to the home and found smoke showing from the garage. There was some extension of fire into the home, but units worked quickly to put out the fire.
Four residents were home when the fire occurred. One resident heard a loud popping noise in the basement and found the fire. All residents evacuated, and one called 911 for help.
Investigators say an electrical malfunction involving the main electrical panel and associated wiring caused the fire in the attached garage. Smoke alarms activated after the residents discovered the fire. The fire department estimated damages to be around $66,450. Images shared by the fire department showed apparent damage to a vehicle in the garage.
Four people were displaced and have declined Red Cross assistance.
