2-Week Detour On W&OD Trail Begins Monday: VDOT

ARLINGTON, VA — Construction on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail over Route 29 in Arlington will mean cyclists and pedestrians will need to use a detour starting Monday for the next two weeks. Around 5 a.m., Virginia Department of Transportation workers will close the W&OD trail between Little Falls Street and Lee Highway near the 5.5 mile marker. Foot traffic will be detoured to north of Little Falls Street. Pedestrians will then need to turn right on Fairfax Drive in order to use the signalized crosswalk for Lee Highway. A sidewalk is available for the entire detour route. Cyclists will be detoured to the south on Little Falls Street, turning left on West Jefferson Street to reach Lee Highway. They'll then need to turn left on Lee Highway to access the signalized crosswalk. Most of Jefferson Street is without a sidewalk. Trail users traveling on the east side of Lee Highway will continue to be shifted to nearby Fairfax Drive for about 200 feet. This section of the road remains closed to vehicle traffic. VDOT reminds cyclists using sidewalks during this detour to yield to pedestrians and dismount if necessary. The new W&OD Trail Bridge in Arlington will provide a safer crossing at a busy intersection. Work is expected to be completed this fall. A two-week detour will also start on Monday on the Custis Trail in nearby Bon Air Park. The trail will be closed in the park between the W&OD Trail and the I-66 underpass.
