Potential Rabies Exposure Risk Reported In East Falls Church Area

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County Animal Control is warning residents in the East Falls Church area about a possible rabies exposure, according to a county release. On Saturday, a raccoon was spotted in the area of the 6900 block Williamsburg Boulevard in Arlington. The animal, which was displaying signs of neurological symptoms, was captured Animal Control after having potential contact with a pet. The raccoon tested positive for rabies. Human beings can contract rabies from a scratch or bite by an infected animal. The disease can prove fatal if medical treatment is not given promptly. Since late November, Animal Control has removed multiple raccoons for the Donaldson Run neighborhood. All the animals showed symptoms consistent with rabies. As recent as Tuesday, Animal Control removed a raccoon from the 2600 block of Military Road after displaying neurological symptoms consistent with rabies. No exposures were reported in that case. Anyone whose pet may have come in contact with wild animals, including raccoons or bats, is asked to call Animal Control immediately at 703-931-9241. If calling after hours, remain on the line to speak with the answering service, which will contact an Animal Control officer. Members of the public are advised not to approach a raccoon if it appears sick, lethargic, disoriented, or aggressive. Instead, immediately call Animal Control.
