In the Democratic primary for U.S. House District 28, which stretches from San Antonio to the U.S.-Mexico border, longtime incumbent Democrat Henry Cuellar narrowly fought off a challenge from progressive Democrat Jessica Cisneros. Democratic and Republican voters in Texas chose their preferred candidated in the presidential race as well as in other federal, statewide and county races on March 3. According to the latest resulst from The Texas Secretary of State's Office as of midnight, Cuellar has a narrow lead with nearly 51.85 percent of the vote (38,720 votes) and Cisneros was under 3,000 votes behind with 48.15 percent of the vote or 35,964 votes with all precincts reporting.d Patch will update this story as live results begin to come in. Check back here for the latest. Cisneros had the endorsement of serious progressive Democrats, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York as well as Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren going into the race. Cisneros, 26, is from Laredo, the hometown of the district she is hoping to represent in Congress, and is an immigration and human rights attorney. She is running on progressive issues like making health care a right, getting money out of politics and fixing the country's immigration system. Cisneros has attacked Cuellar on his record as a moderate Democrat. According to BuzzFeed News, Cuellar has a failing grade from Planned Parenthood and an A rating from the National Rifle Association. Cisneros was being backed by Justice Democrats, the grassroots organization that has propelled progressive candidates to elected office across the country.
