KERRVILLE, TX — Police in Texas say a man is in custody after an hours long standoff that followed the fatal shooting of a woman in a Walmart parking lot, authorities said.
Police in Kerrville, which is located roughly 66 miles northwest of San Antonio, said they responded to a Walmart on 1216 Junction Highway around 10:23 p.m. on Monday where they found a woman who had been shot to death in the parking lot.
The suspect, who police have identified as Fernando Roton Jr., fled the scene and barricaded himself inside a movie theater, according to police.
According to police, at first, Roton said he was willing to give himself up but broke off communication several hours later. Police have since been unable to reach him.
The barricade ended later Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
According to reports, the woman killed in the shooting was a Walmart employee.
"We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our associate," Walmart said in an emailed statement. "This is an active police investigation and we will continue to work with Kerrville Police Department and assist in their investigation in any way possible."
The shooting happened on the same day three people were killed in a shooting outside an Oklahoma Walmart. A gunman killed two people outside the store in Duncan before turning the gun on himself, according to officials.
