WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs saw the lowest weekly percentage hike in coronavirus cases since the summer, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, Western Springs had 950 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 16 from a week earlier, or a 1.7 percent hike. The week before, the village experienced a 1.9 percent increase. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths remained the same at four, with the last one reported as being on Nov 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The figure compares to 68.6 in Darien, 68.7 in La Grange Park, 75 in Hinsdale, 77.1 in DuPage County, 78.2 in Elmhurst, 81 in Clarendon Hills, 85.7 in suburban Cook County, 90.4 in Burr Ridge and 95.2 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,172,824, up .9 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 20,234 state residents. Nationally, 27.8 million people have caught the virus, up 1.4 percent from the week before. A total of 494,008 people have died from the virus in the United States.
