NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A New Rochelle Police Department officer was placed on suspension for an altercation. Police officials said Thursday an altercation involving an off-duty New Rochelle officer and a Mount Vernon resident happened Monday. The fight followed an apparent domestic dispute between the Mount Vernon man and a member of his family that was seen by the off-duty officer, police said. After reviewing the incident, the department determined that the officer's actions were inappropriate. As a result, the officer was placed on 30 days unpaid suspension, which is the most serious disciplinary measure that can be imposed in such circumstances, according to authorities. Additionally, the matter was referred to the Westchester County District Attorney's office for further review. Police said the fight occurred in the presence of several on-duty New Rochelle police officers, all of whom appear to have acted appropriately. A spokesperson said the department trains its members to intervene when they see improper conduct among colleagues, including, as in this case, senior colleagues. The on-duty officers in this instance demonstrated the importance of the training, the department said. The New Rochelle city manager's Clergy Rapid Response team was contacted and met with the city's African American Advisory Committee to share all information about the incident available at the time.
