SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — There have been at least 135 motor vehicle crashes in Suffolk County during Thursday's snowstorm, police said. The figure accounts for crashes between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Police did not immediately say if any were fatal.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on Thursday morning urged all drivers to use caution when on icy roads.
"[The crashes] are a reminder to us of how important it is, if you are out on the roadways, to be very careful, to drive slowly, to take every precaution," Bellone said. "Obviously, if you can stay off the roadways today, we encourage you to do that."
Five separate crashes were reported at 8 a.m. on westbound Sunrise Highway in West Babylon, which led to the highway's temporary closure. Two people were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
Nassau County police officers responded to 63 car crashes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
