EAST MEADOW, NY — A 44-year-old man was stabbed when he tried to intervene in an argument inside a room at the Coliseum Motor Inn in East Meadow on Friday night, Nassau County police said. Police said Jose Gonzalez, 29, of East Meadow had been staying inside a room with other people at the inn, which is located on Hempstead Turnpike, when he became involved in an argument with "another male" just before 11 p.m. A 44-year-old man intervened in the argument, trying "to stop the fight" and Gonzalez took out a knife and stabbed him in the chest, police said. The man was able to leave the room and walk to the lobby for help, police said. His injury was "non-life-threatening" and he was transported to an area hospital for treatment, police said. Gonzalez was found in the hotel room and was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, police said. No further details about the stabbing were available from police. Gonzalez will be arraigned in Mineola on Saturday. If convicted of the assault charge, Gonzalez faces up to seven years in state prison.
