DANBURY, CT — Police charged a Waterbury man with multiple drug offenses following a weeks-long investigation. The Danbury Police Department began their investigation following multiple complaints from residents that Ramell "Mel" Crawford, of Morningside Avenue in Waterbury, was selling illegal drugs from his car. "This was no surprise to police investigators because they arrested him weeks earlier and charged him with drug and weapons-related offenses. Records indicate that today's arrest is his third drug trafficking arrest, two including weapons-related violations, in less than a year," said Det. Lt. Mark Williams Officers from the Danbury Police Special Investigations Division, assisted by officers from the Patrol Division and the DEA Taskforce, established surveillance of locations in Danbury that Crawford was known to frequent on Wednesday. Crawford abandoned his car and fled on foot as police attempted to search him and his vehicle. He was captured a short time later and taken into custody. While no drugs were found on the person of Crawford, the car he abandoned contained a "substantial amount of heroin packaged for sale, money, a portable scale, and several grams of crack cocaine," according to police. Bond was set at $300,00, and hew was "released on substantial bonds from his previous two arrests," according to Williams.
