Press release from the City of Iowa City: February 18, 2021 With the last week of Black History Month approaching, join the City's Black History Month book club discussion of the iconic novel by author Zora Neale Hurston: "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Published in 1937, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is a coming-of-age story that follows a young Black woman named Janie Crawford growing up in the early 20th century American South. It has garnered many honors, including being named one of the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923 by "TIME" magazine. A Zoom discussion of the book will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021. Facilitated by Abena Sankofa Imhotep, Director of Sankofa Literary and Empowerment Group of Des Moines, the book discussion is hosted by the Office of Equity and Human Rights, and the Iowa City Public Library.
