HCPSS Closes Buildings, Still Holds School During Weather Event

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Despite the sleet and snowy winter weather, Howard County Public School System students didn't earn a snow day but instead continued to engage in virtual instruction as usual. However, the school district shuttered its buildings Thursday and canceled all in-person evening activities. Community-sponsored programs housed in HCPSS buildings are canceled, too. The board of education budget work session planned for Thursday has been rescheduled to Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. People flocked to the school's Facebook page to express their opinions about no official snow day for the students and teachers. Jillianne Gallifrey posted that the teachers likely could use a snow day to hang out with their own kids. "And stop being grumpy people just because parents want to give their kids that feeling of joy of not having to wake up for classes," she wrote. Laura Greene Hartman pointed out that everyone recently had a four-day weekend and "don't need a snow day. They need to be in school."
