'Mother Hiller' Has Huntington Station Street Renamed For Her

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — Reverend Mother Agnes Hiller will be honored posthumously with a street renaming in Huntington Station following her dedication to the community, the Town of Huntington announced Thursday. Mother Hiller, as she came to be known, served the community throughout her life by taking in dozens of children and organizing various programs to address issues of hunger, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, and families in need. The Town Board, at its September 2019 meeting, officially recognized Mother Hiller's work to improve the lives of Huntington Station residents by renaming the block of East 10th Street, from New York Avenue to First Avenue, as East 10th Street/Dr. Agnes Hiller Way. A street dedication ceremony was planned for May 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the event's postponement. The dedication is scheduled for noon Monday at E. 10th St. & New York Ave., Huntington Station. Hiller was born in 1904. As a young woman in 1932, she became one of the first members of the newly-formed Mt. Calvary Holy Church of Huntington. She later became assistant pastor and then was named pastor of Mt. Calvary Holy Church soon after the church relocated to its present location at East 10th Street. She served as pastor until she retired in 1994 at the age of 90. Hiller died May 18, 2006, at the age of 102. In summer 2019, Rev. Bernadette Watkins met with Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci to discuss honoring Mother Miller and her contributions to Huntington Station, leading to the street renaming. Lupinacci will be joined by Watkins, pastors and members of Mt. Calvary Holy Church of Huntington, as well as Hiller's family, for the ceremony.
