ELMHURST, IL — This old saying is on the U.S. Postal Service's website: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."
Then again, maybe not, at least in the western suburbs.
In recent days, reports have emerged that residents have not received mail service for days at a time in Elmhurst, Darien and La Grange.
On Tuesday, a discussion about mail delivery occurred on the Elmhurst, IL News and Comment Facebook page. Residents said they did not receive mail service on Saturday or Tuesday, with Monday being Presidents Day, a day off for carriers. Some said they also didn't receive service on Friday.
Last week, a post office spokeswoman for the suburbs confirmed with Patch that staff shortages were to blame for the issues in La Grange. She also said the recent snow and the pandemic have been factors.
Patch tried to reach this same spokeswoman about other towns on Tuesday, but received no answer.
At a meeting Tuesday, Darien Mayor Joseph Marchese said his town has suffered mail delivery issues lately.
The post office is encouraging residents to clear snow from near their mailboxes.
